February 3, 2016 by crayonsandcroissants

Little ones are so fascinated by the idea of Valentine’s Day! Hearts, candy, chocolates – what’s not to love? Here are some of our favorite, kid-friendly ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day! We are such big fans of Tinkerlab, which is a wonderful source for children’s art projects and science experiments. We recently got the Tinkerlab book and use it almost every day to find new projects and ideas – We are all set to tackle building a drawbot (a drawing machine) next! But first, I’m […]

September 8, 2015 by crayonsandcroissants

Join us as we find the dragon and monster in two of our favorite new books! Ever since Little M and I discovered Have You Seen My Dragon and Have You Seen My Monster, both by Steve Light, we quickly added the titles to our list of favorite books. We first came across Have You Seen My Dragon and we love searching for the dragon as he travels uptown, downtown and across town in cabs, buses, boats and subways. Little M counts the monuments, sights and icons […]

Mother’s Day Vase of Flowers

May 8, 2015 by crayonsandcroissants

Surprise mom on Mother’s Day with this DIY vase craft. This is the perfect project for little ones who want to make something special and it’s so easy (I promise)! We started with these simple glass bottles (actually glass milk bottles that we bought at Michaels) but you can also use any glass (or plastic) bottles that you have at home. Gather your supplies – we found these adorable bee and ladybug wooden stickers but you can use anything you have at home such […]

French Cooking for Kids with Claudine Pépin

April 14, 2015 by crayonsandcroissants

Kids Cook French is a beautiful cookbook written by Claudine Pépin and illustrated by Jacques Pépin. We love this new book! Little M and I have spent a lot of time looking through the pages and marking the recipes we want to make. I can’t wait to try the Ratatouille and the Apple Tarts with Almond Frangipani and Little M has his eye on the Cheese Fondue. The classic French recipes are written in English and French. It has been fun to […]

Cocoa and Turmeric Salt Dough Shapes

April 10, 2015 by crayonsandcroissants

We spent an afternoon recently making salt dough shapes. For those of you who haven’t tried making salt dough yet, this is a great project to do with children. They can help with measuring, stirring, kneading, rolling, cutting out shapes, stamping and painting! Here is our recipe for Salt Dough and some step by step instructions. We used natural ingredients to color our dough: cocoa powder for brown and turmeric for yellow. 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 cup fine salt ½ to ¾ cup water […]

In Xander’s Panda Party, written by Newbery Medalist Linda Sue Park and illustrated by Matt Phelan, Xander the Panda takes great pains to plan the perfect birthday party – but he has a little […]
