Paint the town

October 12, 2012 by crayonsandcroissants

As I have mentioned before, I am very into art projects and love the idea of getting Little M involved in working with paint. But a quick look at the ingredients of most kids paint products gives me the heebie-jeebies. Toxins such as formaldehyde, ammonia and lead are just some of the items in many kids paints. Luckily for us, there are numerous options for parents looking for natural art supplies for their little ones. Little M and I recently had […]

A chip off the old block

October 4, 2012 by crayonsandcroissants

I know what you are thinking. How different can building blocks be anyway? Little M and I learned exactly how different when we came across these incredible blocks from Uncle Goose. They are made of sustainable Michigan basswood and embossed with non-toxic ink. The hand-manufactured blocks come in a wide range of colors, styles and patterns including classic alphabets, count and stack blocks, nursery rhyme blocks and (our favorite) foreign language blocks. The blocks feature each language’s alphabets and corresponding pictures. […]

Honestly speaking

September 27, 2012 by crayonsandcroissants

Summer may be over, but it doesn’t seem like the insects got the memo! Little M and I enjoy taking long walks in our neighborhood and he loves spending time outdoors, so I am always looking for safe, non-toxic options for insect repellent. When I heard about The Honest Company, which was created by Christopher Gavigan (the former CEO of Healthy Child Healthy World) and Jessica Alba (yup, the actress), I was intrigued. And when I tried some of the products, I […]

Travel, no luggage required

September 26, 2012 by crayonsandcroissants

Little M and I love to travel. But when we can’t find the time to take a trip, we do the next best thing and read about some of the exciting places that we have visited (or plan to visit)! Here are some of our favorite books about travel. These are all available in a series, so you can keep adding to your collection as you visit new places. I think it is a great way to get your little […]

Bedtime Reading

September 20, 2012 by crayonsandcroissants

You can probably already tell how important books are in our household. We are really trying to impart a love of reading to Little M. Story time before bed is an important ritual. We let Little M pick out the book he wants to read and sit down to enjoy it together. Here are a few favorites in no specific order: The Going-To-Bed Book by Sandra Boynton; this short and simple story is a quick and amusing read. Little M […]

Books, books and more books

September 17, 2012 by crayonsandcroissants

Little M and I love to read. I sometimes think I get more excited about his books than he does, but then he proves me wrong by bringing book after book over to me to read to him. We do have a few favorites, but tend to read quite a variety of books. One of our newest faves is Listen, Listen by Phillis Gershator and Allison Jay. It’s lovely because it walks us through all the seasons, with wonderful rhyming prose […]

Play Dough

September 16, 2012 by crayonsandcroissants

In our quest to use the most non-toxic and eco-conscious products out there, I have decided to make play dough for Little M! I think this falls under the category of things I am more excited about than he is, but I just love art projects. I found a wonderful resource for home-made play dough here, including using natural sources for coloring the dough. So far, we have only made yellow (with turmeric) and red (with beets). Little M tends […]
