We recently made Valentine’s Day Play Dough using all natural ingredients – read on to find out the secret behind the deep pink color!
Play dough is so easy to make at home and it’s an ideal craft for little ones. They love to help measure the ingredients, stir everything up and knead the dough.
Playdough ingredients
½ cup of flour
½ cup of (dyed) water
¼ cup of salt
½ tbsp of cream of tartar
1 tbsp of cooking oil
We prefer to use natural ingredients instead of food coloring, so I chopped one beet and then put it in a pot with some water. Bring the water to a boil and then simmer until you are happy with the color. Strain the water and use it for the recipe above!
Combine your ingredients and let the kids give them a good stir! Then this part is for the grownups: transfer the mix to the stovetop and turn the heat to medium-low. Keep stirring until the ingredients start to stick together, the mixture will start to resemble a ball.
Remove from heat and let cool a little. Knead the play dough on a floured surface (or parchment paper) until it is soft.
We divided our play dough and made one part glitter, one part vanilla scented and left one as is.
Enjoy and remember to store the play dough in an airtight container.
Love it! The beet juice turned the playdough such a beautiful fuchsia!
Thank you! Yes, our patience paid off. We let it simmer for quite awhile, until it became a deep red color.
