Little M and I have been reading about New York City a lot recently. The hubby and I met in NYC (many) years ago and we have been fortunate enough to travel there with Little M and introduce him to some of our favorite places. Little M is fascinated by the taxi cabs, subway, parks and museums. Here, in no particular order, are some of our most loved picture books about New York City.
This Is New York by Miroslav Sasek
This was one of the first books that I received during my baby shower, so it holds many special memories. The story walks readers through New York City’s lively sights, historic buildings and bustling streets. Little M loves reading about the skyscrapers!
Color This Book New York City by Abbi Jacobson
The newest addition to our New York CIty book collection, this coloring book has quickly become a favorite. Little M enjoys coloring in all the pages, we love the pictures of the Guggenheim and the New York Public Library. As we read and color, we also talk about the various places, sights and sounds in New York City.
The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats
This book is a favorite in our house. Little M and I are both mesmerized by the beautiful story and artwork. We follow Peter’s adventures as he bundles himself into his red snowsuit and explores a snowy and magical New York winter wonderland.
Eloise by Kay Thompson, illustrated by Hilary Knight
No collection of favorite New York City children’s books would be complete without Eloise. The precocious resident of the Plaza Hotel takes readers along on her adventures in the hotel. And if your littles ones just love Eloise, you can splash out with an Eloise Party at the Plaza.
Hello, New York City! by David Walker
This is a lovely book for young readers with simple pictures and bright colors. Little M and I enjoy reading about some of New York City’s most popular highlights such as dinosaurs at the American Museum of Natural History, ballerinas at Lincoln Center, taxi cabs, pigeons and the Statue of Liberty.
Good Night New York City by Adam Gamble, illustrated by Joe Veno
Part of the Good Night Our World series, this boardbook walks the littlest readers through New York City’s attractions while the rhyming text lulls them to sleep. As I have mentioned here before, we are big fans of this book series.
Larry Gets Lost in New York City by Michael Mullin and John Skewes
Larry the dog is at it again! This time he gets lost in New York City and has a busy day exploring all five boroughs. Pad along with him as he visits many of New York’s sights including Madison Square Garden and Central Park before reuniting with his family.
A Walk in New York by Salvatore Rubbino
Walk along with this adorable little boy and his dad as they explore Manhattan and see everything from the Statue of Liberty to the Empire State Building. We love the illustrations and the bits of trivia throughout the book.
ABC NYC by Joanne Dugan
A is for Atlas, B is for Bagel… Filled with beautiful photos and simple text, this book takes readers on an alphabet tour of New York City’s most iconic sights. Photographer and author Joanne Dugan uses everything from manhole covers to subway signs to tell the story of New York City.
Next Stop Grand Central by Maira Kalman
